Summary of the Seminar: 1st AKIHO Central Europe Show in Poland 2023
During the 1st AKIHO Central Europe Show in Poland, which took place in 2023, an insightful seminar was conducted by the honorable judge Kosei Miura from Japan. This seminar provided detailed information on the standard and key characteristics of the Akita breed, offering valuable insights into what makes this breed unique and highly esteemed.
Judge Miura began by discussing the standard of the Akita breed, highlighting both the physical and behavioral traits that define this breed. The following key points were emphasized:
- Distinctive Features: Akita dogs are among the few breeds worldwide with erect ears and a curled tail. Their physique is well-balanced, and compared to other large dogs, they convey a strong sense of weight.
Judge Miura then continued his explanations to delve into the essence of the Akita dog and discuss what makes this breed so attractive and what its main strengths are:

Characteristics: Although they have a Spitz-type appearance, their muzzle, ear tips, and tail have a certain roundness, giving them a look that combines gentleness and sharpness. Compared to other breeds, they have a strong neck posture (45°) and a powerful tail base, giving them a solid and stable appearance when viewed from the front, side, or rear.

Appearance and Expression: The eye shape of Akita dogs is not the common round shape found in many other breeds but rather an unequal-sided triangular deep-set eye with upward-turned outer corners, giving their expression a sense of dignity and nobility. Their ears stand firmly forward, enhancing the sharpness of their facial expression.

Coat and Appearance: Their coat comes in a variety of colors, with a beautiful white undercoat and a rich color palette, especially appreciated in the red and brindle shades, which have a unique charm not found in other breeds. Their appearance exudes the dignity of an old Japanese warrior.
Judge Miura then discussed the essence of the Akita dog, explaining that it is described in the standard as follows:
- "It possesses a calm and dignified demeanor, combined with a bold and courageous spirit, is loyal and simple, and even in its simplicity shows an inherent nobility. Its sharp senses and sturdy physique embody the nature of the Akita dog, which remains unfazed by anything."
He acknowledged that this passage might seem difficult to understand at first glance and that it was even a challenge for him to learn it when preparing for the judge's exam. Nevertheless, he explained that this description summarizes the essential traits of the Akita dog in terms of its calmness, steadfastness, courage, and bravery, its loyalty, and its simple nobility.
